Description
Harvesting by Sampson Kuvenguhwa is a commanding stone sculpture that captures the timeless rhythm of human labor and connection to the land. Carved from a single block of serpentine stone, the piece stands at 65 cm high, 70 cm long, and 35 cm wide. Kuvenguhwa’s Dry Tree style is clearly evident in the rough, textured surfaces, which evoke the tactile strength of earth and roots, contrasted with the smoother, abstracted contours of the figure. The form suggests a figure bent forward in the act of gathering, its elongated head and stylized body emphasizing both endurance and humility. The sculpture reflects the artist’s deep roots in Shona spirituality and traditions, where harvesting is not only survival but also celebration—a ritual of gratitude to the ancestors and the natural world. Through abstraction, the artist distills physical toil into a universal metaphor for resilience, sustenance, and the unbroken bond between people and the soil that sustains them.
