Michael Eckart was born in West Germany after the Second World War. He has spent significant time in Japan, Bali, and other parts of Asia, but Venice now feels like home. 
 
From a young age, he aspired to be a photographer or designer, always drawn to creativity. However, these passions did not take center stage in his career until much later. 
 
In the 1960s, he began designing window displays and creating objects for visual merchandising. During this time, MoMA requested some of his designs for an exhibition on contemporary design in New York. 
 
His jewelry gained widespread recognition, with features in prestigious publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and others. 
 
In 2016, his son gifted him an old camera, reigniting his passion for photography. 
 
In 2024, he entered his first photography competition and achieved success.

Karen Safer is an international, award-winning California photographic artist, writer and poet. As a native Angelino, she was given a camera and crayons at 3 and exposed to dominant California motifs: light, palm trees, the ocean, music and vernacular architecture that helped define and influence her left-handed aesthetic. 
 
Fortunate to begin a life of travel as a pre-teen, it shaped her love of the exotic, accidental and unusual that jiggled the lens/frame of her eye; subsequently she has traveled and photographed in over 230 countries and territories. She was influenced by her dad who developed black & white photos in their back washroom/turned darkroom and by her mother’s thirst for knowledge and travel.

Gabriele Marroni earned a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he explored various visual languages including painting, installation, video art, sound art, and cinema. In 2016, he specialized in documentary directing through the “Cinema del Reale” Master’s program at Roma Tre University. He is one of the founding members of the audiovisual collective Collettivo Melkanaa and co- 
directed the film Fuoricampo, for which he also composed the original soundtrack. In 2019, he co-authored the experimental documentary Appropriazione 1. Racconti di Guerra, presented at the 9th FIVA in Buenos Aires. In 2023, he founded the collective Grado Zero, which focuses on analog photography, alternative processes, psychogeography, and audio-video interactions.

"My practice moves across analog photography, video art, painting, sound design, and cinema, shaping a visual research that intertwines media and materials in an experimental way. I use alternative photographic processes and hand-prepared supports, often working with locally sourced materials, to create imperfect and layered images that reflect the fragmented and ambiguous nature of contemporary reality. Through an aesthetics of error, the reworking of found images, and media contamination, I explore social and political issues such as migration, the habitability of urban peripheries, and the 
deconstruction of the dominant Western cultural model. My work challenges standardized visual narratives, celebrating imperfection as a form of visual resistance and inviting viewers to renegotiate their relationship with the image, its context, and their own cultural background."

Brigitte currently lives in Switzerland. She is a self-taught photographer, started shooting as a child inspired by her grandfather whose name she chose to bear as her artist’s name to honour him. 
 
She shot with a film camera for years be it color or black and white, spent hours developing her films in a dark room. In her twenties she travelled around the globe taking her camera along and thus gained great experience especially in landscape and street life photography. 
 
Being reasonable instead of listening to her passion she studied medicine and is still partly working as a medic. Though after a life changing event she had more time for herself and the passion for photography came back stronger than ever. Still taken mostly by landscape and street life photography but also starting to experiment with other approaches.

“It’s time to get out, the sun is calling before it sets. Am I going to take landscape or abstract photographs? I will see once I get there, in the moment. As always, I put myself in a calm and centered state, ready to immerse myself in the environment, to be at one with it and reach an almost meditative state. Usually, I start with a few landscape shots and slowly move into the abstract, go for the discovery, the unexpected, the unknown, for the creation of whatever will be. My camera becomes a painter’s brush. My arms start to move, which is odd at first, since in photography, usually, being still is the norm. I try different types of movements, different time settings, I almost feel like a kid at play! I am in the painting, see the colors change, streaks forming, the distortion operates… it has become an abstraction. My eyes, my heart, and soul aligned.

“Gradient Loss is a personal project I started after losing my father. It explores the five stages of grief, with a focus on depression and the feeling of life losing its color. I shoot in black and white, but I use color filters to subtly change the way light hits the image. Even though there’s no actual color, the filters shift contrast and texture, bringing out different emotions in each photo. Some images are symbols that represent the pain of losing him. Others come from a more instinctive place. They aren’t tied to a clear memory or meaning, but are shaped by feeling, mood, and response to the world around me.”

Abstract photography occupies a space between perception and representation. It resists the obligation to depict and instead privileges experience, sensation and interpretation. Through this refusal of the literal, it invites a more open, reflective mode of seeing.

Detached from narrative and context, elements such as light, form, texture and colour are no longer secondary. They become autonomous, expressive forces. The resulting image is not a record of the world, but an encounter with its possibilities.

Rather than offering clarity, abstraction invites ambiguity. It encourages a form of engagement that is intuitive, responsive and personal. Meaning emerges not through recognition, but through the viewer’s own imaginative and emotional response.

In this way, abstract photography is not a departure from reality, but an alternative way of engaging with it; one that values uncertainty, perception and the poetic potential of the image.
